The Facebook movie: More fun than real life
????A full-length trailer for The Social Network, director David Fincher's adaptation of "The Accidental Billionaires," offers a tantalizing glimpse of what to expect from the Facebook-inspired movie.
????Less than a month after two dialogue-heavy, footage-free, and overly-orchestrated teasers hit the Internet (here and here), director David Fincher and Columbia Pictures must have felt it was time to let loose with a full-length trailer of The Social Network, because earlier today, that's what we got.
????Adapted by Aaron Sorkin of West Wing fame from Ben Mezrich's 2009 New York Times bestseller, The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding Of Facebook, A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal, The Social Network, (aka "The Facebook Movie") is already generating buzz.
????The 2-minute, 27-second trailer is an opulent piece of work that opens with shots of what makes Facebook so hugely popular -- photo albums, status updates, comments, "Likes," and so on -- while a children's choir covers Radiohead's "Creep" in the background with lyrics like, "I want to have control / I want a perfect body / I want a perfect soul." The montage bleeds into actual film footage of the fresh-faced twenty-something cast, including a stoic Jesse Eisenberg, playing founder Mark Zuckerberg right down to that trademark hoodie, and a jheri-curled Justin Timberlake as entrepreneur Sean Parker, reveling over their overnight success.
????While Mezrich's primary source for the book was Eduardo Saverin, a former classmate of Zuckerberg's who helped fund TheFacebook.com, the author admitted to Fortune last year that his retelling is a "dramatic narrative account," and that he reconstructed scenes and dialogue where necessary. "There are certain places in the book where I'm sort of doing a legitimate speculation," he said.
????As such, don't expect The Social Network to be 100% accurate -- or even half that -- but if the trailer, and the talent are any indication, Facebook users -- and even its detractors -- will have something to gossip about around the water cooler this October.
